A Harley Quinn Romance

A Harley Quinn Romance

by Chris Stouffer

Margot Robbie plays the role of Dr. Harleen Quinzel who doesn’t just steal the heart of Gotham City’s #1 bad boy, The Joker (Jared Leto), she also steals the show in DC Comics’ Suicide Squad as only Harley Quinn can.

Unlike most characters born from the pages of DC Comics, Harley was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series in the early 1990s. The character was only intended to appear as a one time wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am type of character, but fans fell for this villainess hardcore according to an article by Jake Black in screenrant.com. I cant lie, the animated Harley had me crushing on her too at one point. I had an obsession with bad girls when I was a kid.Harley-Quinn-Movie-Hammer-Mallet

In Suicide Squad, U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) convinces her peers that she has a plan to put together a task force of some very bad people to be led by Captain Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman). Waller’s suicide squad, a team of what she considers deadbeats with nothing to lose, consist of Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley, both of whom were put away by Gotham’s Dark Knight himself, Batman (Ben Affleck).

Their mission is to enter Midway City and rescue a top secret agent in the middle of a war. Joining them on this mission are Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Flagg’s own sword-wielding sidekick, Katana (Karen Fukuhara). It isn’t until this group realizes what their real mission is, they have to unite and decide whether they’re willing to kill for their country….or be killed when they come face to face with a supernatural force that can tear them all to shreds.

Still it’s Harely Quinn’s backstory and killer charm that make you fall in love with her good girl gone bad character. She’s the life of the party with this bunch, which I’m sure is exactly what Joker saw in her. As we were leaving the theatre, my partner says to me “this is (Margot Robbie’s) Pretty Woman.” Although we saw her in this summer’s Legend of Tarzan, as Jane, playing the hot crazy girl almost seemed natural for her in Suicide Squad.

We also get the back story a small back story of a few of the other characters. Deadshot leaves a daughter behind, while Diablo reveals the reason he doesn’t like using his gift. Harley’s backstory may seem more cliché: good girl falls for bad guy; bad guy leads girl to life of murder and mayhem. And while we know she’s a bad guy, and she’s completely out-of-her-mind. There’s still something about Quinn that draws you to her. She’s just a girl with the same dreams most other girls have. She’s just a little more twisted. And while she reveals a soft side at moments, she still proves she can kick ass like any other bad guy.

If rumors are true, this may earn Harley her own movie down the road. Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer and is rated PG-13 for some language and violence. It opens in theatres across the country today.
